Tom Monroe has been teaching saxophone, clarinet, and flute to people of all ages and levels – including beginners – since 1987. Current lessons are designed to assist the student in developing a practice regimen that will help them get the most satisfaction out of their various music-making experiences, whether they are playing in a band, orchestra, or other ensemble; preparing a solo; or playing for their own enjoyment.
Though his emphasis is primarily on developing the skills for a lifetime of musical enjoyment, Mr. Monroe also assists students in preparing for concerts, festivals, playing tests, and auditions. The discipline needed to prepare for such events provides invaluable practice in goal setting and time management as well as opportunities for further musical experiences. Students have successfully auditioned for Howard County GT Band, Howard County Honors Band, Maryland All State Junior and Maryland All State Senior Bands.
Tom Monroe has a Masters in Teaching from National University and a Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition from the University of Maryland, College Park, where he studied saxophone with Reginald Jackson. He has also studied saxophone with Ron Diehl, flute with Kathleen Trahan, Mark Stein, and Howard Klug, clarinet with Bill Wright, jazz studies with Ron Elliston and Dr. George Ross, and ear training/musicianship with Dr. Asher Zlotnik. In addition to occasional combo work, Tom currently performs with two community jazz ensembles: playing saxophone with the Columbia Jazz Band, and piano with the Columbia Big Band. Since 2000, he has been a music teacher for the Howard County Public School System.
